Exploring the Vale of Glamorgan's Best Dog Walks

There’s something magical about autumn in the Vale of Glamorgan. The golden leaves crunching underfoot, the crisp air nipping at your cheeks, and the promise of a cosy pub at the end of a long walk. And who better to share these adventures with than Derek, my trusty companion with a wagging tail and an insatiable love for sniffing out woodland secrets?

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your next autumnal outing, here are our favourite dog-friendly walks in the Vale of Glamorgan. Derek approved, of course!

1. Porthkerry Country Park

This gem is a must-visit in autumn. Derek loves trotting across the sprawling meadows, weaving between trees adorned with fiery leaves. The woodland trails lead you to the iconic railway viaduct, where we usually stop for a quick game of fetch. There’s even a dog-friendly café by the car park for a warming cup of tea and a sneaky treat for Derek.

Top Tip: Take the trail down to the pebble beach—there’s nothing quite like the sound of waves mingling with the rustle of autumn leaves.

2. Cosmeston Lakes Country Park

Cosmeston is like stepping into a fairy tale during autumn. The shimmering lakes mirror the oranges and reds of the trees, and Derek can’t resist splashing in the shallows. With plenty of paths to explore, this is a haven for dogs who love a good roam. Bonus: there’s a designated dog exercise area where Derek loves to make new furry friends.

Don’t Miss: The reconstructed medieval village adds a touch of history to your walk—and there’s plenty of space nearby for Derek to zoom about.

3. Nash Point Coastal Path

For a walk with a view, the coastal path at Nash Point is unbeatable. Derek and I love the dramatic cliffs, the salty sea breeze, and the stunning panoramas over the Bristol Channel. We usually start at the lighthouse and follow the path toward Marcross, stopping along the way to admire the wild beauty of the coastline.

Important: Keep your dog on a lead near the cliff edges—Derek’s enthusiasm for exploring sometimes takes him a little too close for comfort!

4. Dyffryn Gardens

While parts of this National Trust site are off-limits to dogs, the surrounding area offers plenty of scenic spots for a stroll. Derek enjoys the long, leafy paths, and the crunch of fallen leaves seems to put an extra spring in his step. On quieter days, we even venture into the quieter fields nearby for a picnic (complete with treats for Derek).

Good to Know: Check seasonal opening times and dog-friendly areas before you go.

5. The Heritage Coast Path

The stretch of the Wales Coast Path along the Vale of Glamorgan is a showstopper, particularly in autumn. Derek and I love starting at Ogmore-by-Sea, where the golden sands give way to dramatic cliffs and expansive views. The bracing sea air combined with the autumn chill is invigorating for both of us.

Pro Tip: Finish your walk with a visit to the Pelican in Her Piety, a dog-friendly pub in Ogmore, for a well-earned pint and a bowl of water for Derek.

Derek’s Autumnal Essentials

Before setting out, we make sure Derek’s autumn wardrobe is ready to tackle the elements. His waterproof coat is a lifesaver for those drizzly days, and I always carry a towel to dry him off after inevitable muddy adventures. A thermos of tea for me and some treats for him are non-negotiable additions to our bag.

Why We Love Autumn Walks

There’s something about this time of year that makes every walk feel special. Whether it’s the crunch of leaves under Derek’s paws or the way the golden sunlight filters through the trees, autumn walks in the Vale of Glamorgan are a treat for both of us. So, leash up your dog, pull on your wellies, and head out to discover the magic of autumn in the Vale.

And if you happen to spot a handsome, floppy-eared pup bounding through the leaves, be sure to say hello—it might just be Derek!
