If your idea of a perfect family weekend involves a cosy holiday cottage, a pub on the corner, and kids who are genuinely, happily exhausted by the end of it Cheshire needs to go straight to the top of your UK staycation list. We headed to Sanstone 34 at Bolesworth with a toddler, a dog, and absolutely zero expectations. We left completely obsessed

From pub dinners and Uno by the fire to a full day of chaos at The Ice Cream Farm — soft play, go-karts, slides, trampolines, golf, and diggers — there was genuinely something for every "big kid" in the family. Here's the full itinerary, plus everything you need to plan your own Cheshire family break.

Where to Stay: Dog-Friendly Holiday Cottages in Cheshire

We stayed at Sanstone 34 — a beautiful holiday cottage at Bolesworth in the Cheshire countryside, booked through Oyster Holiday Cottages. If you're searching for dog-friendly holiday cottages in Cheshire or family-friendly self-catering in Cheshire, Bolesworth is an excellent base. The estate is stunning, the setting is rural without being remote, and having a proper home to come back to at the end of the day makes a real difference when you're travelling with little ones and pets.

Oyster Holiday Cottages have a strong selection of holiday cottages in Cheshire and the surrounding area well worth browsing if you're planning a UK family staycation in the north of England. DM me @llioangharad on Instagram for a direct link to the property.

Best Family Days Out in Cheshire

The Ice Cream Farm, Cheshire

The Ice Cream Farm is one of the most popular kids' days out in Cheshire — and for very good reason. What looks like a farm shop from the outside is actually one of the biggest family attractions in the north of England, with soft play, go-karts, giant slides, trampolines, adventure golf, and diggers. It's chaotic in the best possible way, and the ice cream is, obviously, excellent. Plan to spend most of a day here if you're visiting with young children ,they will not want to leave.

Tattenhall and Tarporley Villages

Two of Cheshire's most charming villages are worth a proper mooch on your family weekend. Tattenhall is a picture-perfect Cheshire village with independent shops, great pubs, and easy countryside walks straight from the village centre. Tarporley is equally lovely , a slightly larger market town with a brilliant high street, ideal for a slow morning browse before lunch. Both are classic examples of why Cheshire is such a great destination for a UK countryside break with the family.

Where to Eat & Drink: Family-Friendly Food in Cheshire

The Pheasant Inn, Tattenhall — Best Pub Dinner in Cheshire

For dinner, we ate at The Pheasant Inn in Tattenhall — one of the most recommended pubs in Cheshire and a genuinely lovely spot for a family pub dinner. The food is seriously good: order the scotch egg to start (it's exceptional) and the pheasant if it's on — you won't regret it. It's the kind of pub that makes you want to stay for another round and just... not go home. Dog-friendly, kids welcome, and the kind of atmosphere that makes a Cheshire weekend feel properly special.

The Hollies Farm Shop — Best Farm Shop in Cheshire

No Cheshire weekend is complete without a stop at The Hollies Farm Shop. One of the best farm shops in Cheshire, The Hollies has an excellent deli counter, bakery, butchery, and café — perfect for stocking up on breakfast bits for the cottage or picking up something for the journey home. It's also a lovely browse in its own right, and a great stop if you're travelling with kids who need a leg stretch.

Ginger & Pickles Tea Rooms — Best Coffee Stop in Cheshire

For a mid-trip coffee stop, Ginger & Pickles Tea Rooms is a local favourite — cosy, charming, and exactly the kind of place you hope to find in a Cheshire village. Ideal for a warming coffee and cake pit stop between activities.

Your Full Cheshire Family Weekend Itinerary

Why Cheshire is Perfect for a Family UK Staycation

Cheshire doesn't always get the credit it deserves as a family travel destination in the UK — but it really should. It has the infrastructure of a county that takes visitors seriously: beautiful self-catering cottages and holiday lets, an excellent pub and restaurant scene, family attractions that are genuinely impressive (The Ice Cream Farm alone is worth the trip), and countryside and villages that are just deeply pleasant to exist in for a few days.

It's also very well-located for families travelling from the Midlands, the North West, North Wales, or Yorkshire — making it an easy, low-stress UK staycation that doesn't require a motorway marathon to get there. Add in dog-friendly pubs and accommodation, and Cheshire becomes a very easy yes for anyone planning a family break in the UK.
